Two-Shot Injection Molding

RpMolds engineers and builds two-shot (2K) tooling that molds two materials — or two colors of the same material — into a single part, in one continuous cycle. Rigid structure and soft-touch comfort fuse together inside the mold, so there’s nothing left to bond, glue, or assemble afterward.

Material Combinations We Run

RpMolds processes engineering plastics, commodity resins, and elastomers across our two-color and general-purpose machines. These are the pairings we run most often.

Substrate (Shot 1)Second ShotBond TypeCommon Application
ABSTPUChemicalPower tool handles, protective cases
PCTPEChemicalDevice enclosures, medical instrument grips
PC/ABSTPU / TPEChemicalDashboard switches, appliance housings
PPTPE (PP-compatible)ChemicalAutomotive trim, closures, living-hinge parts
PA6 (Nylon)TPE / TPUChemicalUnder-hood components, sporting goods

Listed pairings are starting points, not guarantees — bond strength depends on the specific resin grade, mold temperature, and part geometry. Our engineering team validates your chosen materials during DFM review before tooling begins.

Why Manufacturers Choose Two-Shot Molding

Combining two materials inside the mold changes more than the part’s feel — it changes the economics of producing it.

No Secondary Assembly

Both materials bond inside the mold, removing adhesives, ultrasonic welding, and manual fitting from your production line.

A Bond That Doesn't Let Go

Chemically compatible resins fuse at the interface, producing a stronger, more durable joint than anything glued or snapped together afterward.

Freedom to Design in Two Materials

Soft-touch grips, integrated seals, light pipes, and two-color branding all become possible in a single molded part.

Fewer Steps, Lower Total Cost

Replacing a molding-plus-assembly process with one molding cycle cuts labor, handling, and scrap — even when tooling costs more upfront.

Built-In Sealing

A continuous bonded interface seals better than a mechanically fastened one — important for IP-rated housings and sterile medical devices.

Consistent at Volume

Once the tool and process are validated, every part comes out with the same registration and bond strength — no operator-dependent assembly variation.

HOW IT WORKS

The Two-Shot Molding Process

Every two-shot part moves through the same four stages inside the press, without ever leaving the mold.

01

First Shot Injection

The substrate resin is injected into the first cavity, forming the structural base of the part.

02

Mold Indexing

The mold rotates, shuttles, or the part is robotically transferred to the second cavity while the substrate is still warm.

03

Second Shot Injection

The second resin or color is injected onto the substrate, bonding chemically at the interface or mechanically through interlocking features.

04

Cooling & Ejection

Both materials cool as a single unit and eject together — fully bonded, finished, and ready for secondary operations or shipment.

Three Ways We Index a Second Shot

Rotary Platen

The entire mold half rotates 180° between stations — the standard approach for most two-shot tooling.

Shuttle / Index Plate

A core plate slides sideways between two fixed cavities, useful for larger or asymmetric parts.

Core-Back / Robotic Transfer

Retractable cores or a robot move the substrate to the second cavity, keeping tooling cost down on lower-cavitation molds.

What Is Two-Shot Injection Molding?

What is Two Shot Injection Molding

Two-shot molding injects two different resins, or two colors of the same resin, into one mold during a single, uninterrupted cycle. The first shot forms the base part. While it’s still warm, the mold indexes to a second cavity, where the second material is injected directly onto or around it. The two layers bond as they cool and eject together as one finished component.

Because both shots happen in the same tool and the same cycle, two-shot molding produces a stronger interface than parts assembled after the fact — and removes a manufacturing step entirely. It’s the process of choice when a part needs to combine rigidity with grip, structure with seal, or a base color with a logo that won’t wear off.
